September 7, 2005

Your assignment for today:

Part 1: Write a short paragraph (5-7 sentences) with the titles of the five journals that you found in your field and the sorts of issues discussed in those journals.  Your paragraph could include: the issues you found interesting and why; the issues you didn’t know your field dealt with; the issues you found boring; and/or the issues you want to know more about.  In addition, list the documentation style you think you would use to write a journal article in your field.

Part 2: Review the comments of your classmates.  Respond to a classmate whose field is the same or similar to your own or, if none are similar, respond to a classmate whose field seems interesting.  In your response, suggest three websites that deal with the issues that your classmate discussed in his/her comment (you will need to search the internet to find these sites).  In addition, suggest one website that describes/explains the documentation that your classmate mentioned in his/her comment.

Next Monday, we will discuss the various issues you might find interesting to explore more.  Therefore, I suggest that you check out the links that your classmate’s suggestions so you will have ideas to discuss.

You will have until Weds. at midnight to finish Part 1.  You will have until Friday at 5pm to complete Part 2.  If you do not do part one and part two you will be counted as absent.

There are computer labs on campus for you to do this assignment.  You need an email account to complete this assignment, so, if you don’t have an email account, you can sign up for one via www.yahoo.com, www.hotmail.com or some other email program you would like to use  (you can also get an email account from the school, however, I am not sure they can get you set up in less than a day).

Below are the directions for using blogger and posting comments.  They are very detailed, so if you are computer savvy or know how already and you want to ignore my directions and figure it out on your own, feel free.

To do part one:

Respond to this blog entry, you go to the link below that says comments. On the right side you will see “Leave your comments” and a place for you to write your comment. Do not leave your comment at this time. Below the text box, you will see a place for your username and password.   Sign in when you see the above to post your comment.

If you don’t have a blogger account, click “sign up here.”  It will ask you to go through a number of steps to create an account.  Do these steps (including create a blog and pick a template—even if you never use your blogger account outside of this class, you need to do these steps to comment on my blog).  Make sure you make note of your new username and password.  Once you have done these steps, it will say, “Start Posting.”  Do not click this.

Go back to miles222.blogspot.com.  Go back to the link below this Sept 7, 2005 entry that says comments.  Again, one the right side you will see, “leave your comments” and a place for you to write your comment.  Write your comment here.  (I would suggest first writing your comment in MS Word or some other word processing program and cut and paste (Ctrl C for cut, Crtl V for paste) your comment into the “leave your comments” section.  This will make sure you don’t lose your comment if something with the computer/internet goes wrong and it will also allow you to check the word count (to check word count in MS Word, go to Tools, Word Count).  Now that you have a blogger account, type in your username and password and then click “Login and publish.”

To do part 2:

To respond to your classmate’s comments, you simply, again, click on comments below this blog entry.  I suggest you do this after Weds. at midnight to make sure there are comments for you to read.  Read through the comments so you can do part 2.  On the right, it will say, “leave comments.”  Write the name of the person (or whatever username they use) and write what you want to say in response to the comment you need to in order to do the directions for part 2.  In order to suggest webpages or websites, type (or cut and paste) the address for that site or page into your message (with a short explanation and name of the site/page so the person knows why you are suggesting it).  Again, put your username and password and push login and publish.

If you have any questions about the above process or about the assignment, email me at melissa_miles@yahoo.com.  I will be checking my email regularly (and this blog) and usually can respond within one or two hours until 10 or so at night.  You can also call me at 989-386-3386.  I don’t have voicemail yet, so you if I (or my husband) don’t answer, try back a little bit later.
